Robert M. Erickson

Instruct students in various computer courses. Currently working on ways to introduce active learning into the classroom. I try to work service learning and or real world projects into my courses. Course topics include word-processing, spreadsheets, database, electronic mail, programming, History of Computers and World Wide Web Design. Software includes Microsoft Office (I wrote the book for the class), Visual Basic, Java, JavaScript, ASP, PHP, HTML, Pascal, UNIX, DOS, Windows. Students range from first year, seniors, to adults in continuing education. Duties include preparation of lectures, labs and all assignments. Class size averages 40 students.

Collaborative group comprised of faculty in Computer Science Department and the College of Education and Social Services. Our main task has been to create a concentration in Computer Science Education, a minor in Computer Science and Education to benefit University of Vermont students who upon completion will be granted endorsement to teach computer science courses in the State of Vermont. Our next step is to provide the endorsement to teachers who are already working but do have the Computer Science endorsement.

Web Site, Worked with Antonio Cepeda-Benito, Professor of Psychology, University of Vermont, to create and build a web based Smoking cessation app to gather information from a smoker and provide the smoker with information that hopefully will allow the quit smoking. I have worked with a three students to help create this program. The site is located at Quit Now.

Web Site, Worked with Caroline Weaver, Assistant Director of Academic Services, Department of Athletics to create and build a web based portal to bring online the process of tracking student-athlete academic performance. I have worked with a half dozen students to help automate this process. If you have a student athlete in your class you may have used this system. Web Site, Worked with Dr. Kessler PhD ABPP, Juvena Hitt and Jon Van Luling to launch a web site tool kit to help medical practiced measure their integrated with the medical complex. Web Site, Created a Java program with ODBC to create a web site for the Cooperative Research Unit Program. Program reads data from a MySQL database (updated weekly) and creates website based on the information originally retrieved from Digital Measures software. Main purpose of site is to provide public access to scientific research of the scientist. See web site link above.

Web Site, Worked with Dr. Josh Bongaurd and Dr. Paul Hines to launch a web site on crowd sourcing

Database, Worked with a large group of people (students and Biologist and other parties involved) to design and create a database to keep track of wildlife harvest and observation data gathered for the State of Vermont. Currently working on implementing database.

Student Database, Created a database to keep track of students, memberships, alumni, donations and billing for students, parents, donors and business involved with the Vermont Youth Orchestra

Graphical Interface for Snow Models, Creating a graphical interface (Visual Basic) for various Fortran programs used to model the melting conditions of snow for flood damage control.

Community/Business matching program, Task is to finish, debug and improve a visual basic program that they will be using to match communities and business together. An interesting little project as the person who wrote most of the code had an interesting style.

Assay Program, Worked with several chemists in redesigning a program to input data to perform regression analysis using absorbance and concentration amounts read by a machine from test tubes. A Visual Basic Program that has completely automated the calculations as the input numbers have been entered.

Database Implementation Worked with the Professional Program staff to implement a database system for keeping track of the programs offered and time lines for the programs.

Internship Creation Worked with the MIS manager to develop an internship program for students. Documented the current polling process for the company and developed a manual for use by interns over the coming semesters. Worked with MLINK Polling, OMRON polling and Excelnet Polling software. Paradox database systems both DOS and windows versions.

Spreadsheet Design Worked with a programmer and user in converting a FORTRAN program into a spreadsheet program. The goal of the program was to provide the Research Center with production cost analysis of producing maple syrup.

Menu Design Worked with a team to design and build the menu structure for an interactive television. Utilized Visual Basic as the main design aid. An interesting short term project that provided me with an insight of some of the things to come. My favorite idea was to put a hard drive in the tv and record the shows digitally.
